Music has always been more than just something to listen to—it’s therapy. It’s a way to escape, to reflect, and to feel emotions that words alone can’t express. Every beat, every lyric, every melody tells a story, just like life. No matter what you’re going through, music has a way of making you feel understood.
I grew up surrounded by music—it wasn’t just in the background, it was a part of life, a language my family spoke fluently. My Grandad Eugene made sure we all had a deep appreciation for the ’70s and ’80s classics. Those old-school records had a different type of soul—whether it was Marvin Gaye, The O’Jays, or Earth, Wind & Fire, those songs weren’t just played, they were felt. That’s the kind of music that stands the test of time, the kind that still brings families together.
Then there was Big Bro Ray, who introduced me to hip-hop in a way that felt like an education. Lil Durk, Future, Lil Wayne, Jeezy, and so many others—those artists weren’t just rapping; they were telling stories, painting pictures of struggle, success, pain, and perseverance. Hip-hop became a blueprint for resilience, a genre built on real-life experiences and raw emotion.
And of course, there were the car rides with Big Kay, my pops—that’s where I really learned about music’s power. Riding shotgun while he blasted NWA, Ice Cube, Kem, Mary J. Blige, and Tevin Campbell, I started to understand how music could hold memories. Some songs remind you of people, of moments, of lessons you didn’t even realize you were learning at the time.
Music has this way of getting you through the toughest times. When things feel heavy, when the pressure is on, when life isn’t making sense, there’s always a song that feels like it was made just for you. Some songs motivate you, some bring back good memories, and some just help you sit with your emotions without feeling alone.
I truly believe that most music has a story behind it—whether it’s about love, pain, success, or loss. The way musicians express themselves, the way a song’s title already sets the tone before the first note even plays—it’s all storytelling at its core. That’s why music connects so deeply.
For me, music isn’t just sound—it’s a feeling, a time capsule, a way to navigate life’s highs and lows. No matter what you’re going through, there’s a song that can help you through it. That’s what makes music the greatest therapy there is. 🎶💯
